How often does this happen, really? In rare cases like that, one would have to worry just about everything, and even possessions that are way more important than images!!! I've had friends lose everything they own that wasn't online, in fires And I can see how that's a key hurdle, along with the fact that formats are proprietary. I think the trick would be for Flickr to have a clear way to indicate that this is a RAW file we're looking at, though, and that any conversion we *see* is only for the purposes of being able to visually identify the file's contents, which is important in the absence of unique titles. I'd love a solution that's on a site I already use, if the cost is reasonable. I've always meant to back up my stuff outside my home but have never got around to it. I've had friends lose everything they own that wasn't online, in fires. Relying on ANY online / cloud storage is just plain playing with fire.įor further insight, try googling the once mighty photo-storage site PhotoPoint. It is far FAR better to store your files locally, backed up and with at least one non-computer location. I just added an additional pair of 5TB drives, to the array I already have. You can purchase quite large external hard drives at very reasonable prices. Flickr provides (non-pro) members with a total of 1TB storage space. Admittedly, RAW files are larger than jpgs, and over time can require a fair amount of storage space. External hard drive space is dirt cheap, and less costly every day. Wow.I would NEVER upload RAW files to Flickr, never. MabelAmber® ***Pluto5339*** Queen of Streetshots: I have many years worth of RAW files stored on a single NAS drive (in addition to my regular hard drive and some DVDs)Įn./wiki/Network-attached_storage I don't think it's a good idea and it's property I want to preserve on various external storage, at home. Still stuck with multiple hard drive back ups as I'm not really keen on any of the other cloud-based options, as they all require extra steps in work flow. I really need a way to backup and store the raw files to download in the future as I wish to process them. It would even be nice for Flickr to store the raw files as-is without processing them to display. Thank you for the response and explanation of the challenges with raw files. It doesn't mean that we won't support it in the future - it's a topic that frequently comes up as something we'd like to do (I can say personally that it's something I'd love to have!) but right now, we don't. There are also many very subtle moving pieces which can dramatically change the result - for example, upgrades to the debayering algorithms from manufacturers. A post-processing workflow to develop a RAW file that works well for one photographer could easily be totally unacceptable for another. Processing a RAW file for display is like developing a physical negative - there are many ways it could be done and we don't want to make any strong assumptions on the photographers behalf. Folks who care enough about shooting raw probably also care about how the image is developed :] Our very brief take on it: raw files are tricky because we can't reasonably infer the photographers intent for processing and displaying the image. FYI, good article to know what's out there. I definitley want to know if they update to accept RAW. MabelAmber***Pluto5339***MysteryGuest edited this topic 98 months ago.
